Queerplatonic relationship
A committed, intentional partnership that doesn't fit the usual boxes of friendship or romance — defined by the people in it rather than a script.
What it means
A queerplatonic relationship (QPR) is a close, committed bond that goes beyond what's typically called friendship but isn't defined by romantic or sexual expectations. The term grew out of aromantic and asexual communities, though anyone can be in one. What sets a QPR apart is intentional commitment — partners deliberately choose a level of closeness, priority, and mutual responsibility that a conventional friendship wouldn't assume. The 'queer' here means it questions the default script for how relationships are supposed to work, not necessarily anything about anyone's orientation.
How partners define it
There's no single template — that's the point. Some QPRs involve living together, sharing finances, or co-parenting; others are emotionally central but structurally lightweight. Because a QPR doesn't come with cultural defaults, partners usually have to name things out loud that other relationships leave unspoken: how much time and priority each person expects, whether the bond is exclusive in any dimension, what commitment means to them, and how it fits alongside other relationships. That explicit definition is a feature, not extra work — it means both people are actually agreeing to the same thing.
