Position

Edge of the bed

Also known as off the bedbed edgestanding at the bed

The edge-of-the-bed position has one partner lying at the edge of the mattress while the other kneels or stands at the side — an ergonomic way to solve height and angle.

The gist

One partner lies back near the edge of the bed with hips at the rim, while the other stands or kneels at the bedside. Using the mattress edge as a height adjuster makes angles that would strain the body elsewhere feel easy and comfortable. It's versatile, hands-free, and easy on the knees and back.

Step by step

  1. The receiving partner lies back with hips near the edge of the mattress.

  2. The other stands or kneels at the bedside, adjusting height with the floor or a cushion.

  3. Support the receiving partner's legs on shoulders, arms, or the bed.

  4. Fine-tune the angle by moving closer to or further from the edge.

Tips

  • The bed edge is a built-in height adjuster — use it to find an angle that's easy on both bodies.
  • A pillow under the lower back adds comfort for the partner lying down.
